I 'got' Loki when he was 8 weeks old, and while I was administrator at a group home for boys in partial custody of the state.  He was about the size of a football at the time and I was able to bring him to work with me almost everyday.  All the clients and staff alike fell in love with Loki and he became a major part of everyones lives there.  When the 'State' came in to verify the policies and procedures of the group home, they found him laying on his back offering his belly to a crying and deescalating client.  Needless to say, Loki officially was recognized as being the 'house dog' of the group home.

During our many years working over sixty hours a week there (plus overnights), Loki made an enormous impact on many children and adults.  From a young morbidly obese boy with gall stones who used his relationship with Loki to lose weight, a young non-english speaker who was able to use Loki's 'presence' during therapy to communicate, and multiple staff members who Loki reminded what it was like to be a kid; Loki was part of the team.

LOKI THE DOG:

I recently was an educator at a school for children with different abilities.  Many of the students there were diagnosed with Autism, RAD, PDD, and many other emotional/behavioral conditions.  Loki was unable to visit my students there, but I would call in to the classroom on days that I was absent to check in with the students and allow them to 'talk' to Loki on speakerphone.  Loki would bark, whine, howl, and even sing with accompaniament of a harmonica or guitar for the children in response to their voices.  I was able to bring Loki to a baseball game for children with multiple physical impairments.  On that day, my student did it like Big Papi and hit the ball right out of the park!

LOKI THE SICK:

I was about to fly out to do faciliate some learning style observations on a very bright little girl, when my father suggested to me to bring Loki in to have his back leg checked out.  Loki had been limping for a week and I assumed he had just sprained it jumping off of the deck, falling through the deck, hiking, playing with our other dogs, or bouncing around the yard.  I called and spoke to the amazing receptionist at Ayer Medical Clinic who instructed me to bring Loki right in to have it checked out.

As usual, Loki was greeted with open arms and cookies as he galloped into the office.  I think he is one of the very few dogs who gets excited and brings me the leash when I mention going to the vet!  He happily disapeared with the Vet. Tech. and I was instructed to come back in about a half hour (I live a few doors down from the Vet) to get the results.  Those damned results.

As I entered the building I could see something a little off about the eyes of the very kind and gentle receptionist.  The Dr. immediately met me and brought me to look at what the x-rays were explaining was the cause of Loki's limp.

OSTEOSARCOMA

It hurts me to even type the word.  It's a very uncomfortable bone cancer thats goal is to eventually spread to the lungs.  If I do nothing, we lose him in a couple months potentially.  The other options would be to save the limb, cut out the cancer, and replace the area bone with a Titanium alloy weave, or take the entire hind quarter.  Both options come with some Chemo therapy to ensure/prevent spread or new growth.  Either option won't allow my little buddy to live forever, but both could help enjoy perhaps a year or more with a good quality of life.

Good of limb sparing: Still have a limb.

Bad of limb sparing: Recovery time almost three months, and possible to have another surgery if things dont go perfectly.  Again, its all about the quality of living at this point.

Solution?  Amputation.  When the Dr. told me recovery time was a few weeks and that Loki would be on his feet a few days after the surgery, I thought he was full of balogna.

Because of the time sensitivity of the Cancer, Loki had his rear right leg amputated on July 13, at Tufts Veterinary Medical School in North Grafton, Ma. My family all squeezed in his little pen and stretched out on the floor with him to rub his big face.  It was Loki's first time not sleeping with someone that he loved, and I didn't sleep the entire time that he was there either.  On th 15th of July we got to pick him up and bring him home.

Was the Doctor full of balogna?  NO!  Although he is a lot of work, Loki is doing very well and is doing five stair steps at a time, doing all of his business, and finally sleeping through the night.  He has also gone to visit the awesome people at Ayer Medical Center to show off his recovery.  He still is uncomfortable, but stitches come out soon and the Cancer treatment begins soon as well.

LOKI THE EXPENSIVE:

During his very rich and positive life, Loki has brought out the best any person who interacts with him.  Cushioning the bills for all of his clumsy stumbles and minor medical issues over the years has always been a little struggle, but my entire family has made sacrifices in order to make sure that Loki continues being a happy and healthy dog.

The surgery was obviously expensive, his Cancer treatments and medicines will certainly be costly, the special bedding and bowls and such will add up, and thats not to mention the Bully Stick bill! (he's got to stay happy, right?)

I want the rest of Loki's life to be as amazing and happy as it has always been.  I would love to be able to bring him to visit hospitals, vets, and group homes to be able to continue to share and spread his love for life and motivation.

LOKI THE CAUSE:

What Loki, myself, my family, and all those that Loki has affected is asking for any type of donation to help cushion the cost of all of his care.

Please donate any amount that you can.  Every cent goes to all of Loki's bills, care, medicine, and supplies.

Fox Necklace
Chapter 5 – Honey and Stevie

Honey, Whimsy, and Stevie landed near the Chapel. "The Rose was a mistake.....please don't get angry....." said Stevie.

Before Honey could respond, Stevie pushed on.  “When I was young, way before I had met you, I came across an infant in the forest.  She was all dressed up in this little monkey suit, she looked
Dachshund Print
absolutely adorable.  Anyway, although she was so tiny, she could already speak more fluently than I could.  She asked me if I could help her find her dog.  Well, I had been just looking for something to do so I didn’t mind one bit.

Loki HATED dogs, so he sure knew how to track them down.  We found the pup in no time.  Adorable little thing, and just so rambunctious and….well, happy.  Which is funny, because the dogs name was happy.

“Stevie, you are getting off topic…” interrupted an anxious Honey.

Honey noticed a gorgeous strand of beautiful burgundy hand-woven yarn hanging from a thorn bush about a yard in front of them.  Stevie had been talking but Honey had tuned him out.  “Stevie, they went this way,” said Honey as she pulled the yarn from the bush.

Stevie HATED it when Honey tuned

him out.  But he had the same problem

with her, so I guess it was all fair.  “You

are right…..Lucy really never does plan

ahead does she?”

“You are right about that….but you are getting off topic

again….” responded Honey.

“I bring it up because I have spotted the footprints of a

woman wearing heels…..either that or there is an animal out

there with some very interesting feet,” joked Stevie.

Honey laughed.  As she

was about to respond they

both turned their heads

toward the yipping coming

from behind

them.  The foxes made it!

Loki and Scarlet both

nuzzling up

too Honey and snapping at each other, while Scout made

doe eyes at Stevie and Djali just scampered around like a

nut.  Whimsy gave Honey a push as if to say, “Let’s get

going and not forget why we are here!”

Meanwhile…

Lucy and Salome were just about to enter the garden.

Salome had taken the key from Lucy, shoved it into the

lock, and then just before she turned the key a loud a angry

voice of a woman began to sound itself inside there heads....

"You better think twice before turning that key....remember what I did to Repunzel!"

Salome and Lucy looked at each other and shrugged. "Here goes," said Salome as she turned the key.

The garden was just full of exotic plants that neither of the girls had ever seen. Not only were the plants strange and exotic, but so were the insects and the birds. All of them incredibly beautiful, but also fantastically foreign.

Salome's eyes immediately turned toward a funny looking cherry tree. "That is what you have been looking for all this time. These cherries are what turned your ever so precious Charmy into a bug munching amphibian," said Salome.

"What good is knowing what turned him into a frog? I need to know what will turn him back!" replied Lucy.

Salome picked one of the cherries right off of the tree. "Sometimes the causes of our problems are also the solutions. If you can get that frog of yours to eat this cherry, he will turn right back into whatever he was before he ate the cherry. I can promise change, not improvement," joked Salome.

"For your information, he doesn't need any improvement! Also, how do I know that you are telling the truth? For all I know, these cherries could turn him into something worse.....perhaps an worm or an ameoba! That would be TRULY terrible," said Lulu.

"Well, the only way to find out if it works is to try it out on yourself," said Salome.

Lucy knew that Salome might be evil, she may even be under the influence of the Wicked Queen. But what choice did she have? She didn't want to 'test' Charmy when she found him, so maybe the solution was to try it out on herself. If what Salome said was true, then she could turn right back.

Lucy picked on of the cherries, studied it for a moment, and then said "What the heck?" as she tossed it into her mouth. Just then, the door to the garden slammed shut.

"Who dares disturb my garden?" said the voice of an old woman...........

Once Upon a Time in the Foxes Den Kingdom (pt 4)

Sweet Little Princess Dress Pattern
Chapter 4 - Lucy and Salome - searching for the Enchanted Orchard.

Lucy followed Salome through the forest, farther and farther away from the castle they went.  She couldn't help but wonder if she had made a huge mistake.  Whimsy should have been here by now if she got her message.  Ms. Nettle must be beside herself with worry.

"I don't even know who this girl is or where we are going.  I always am getting myself in over my head..." thought Lucy.

Salome let out the loudest whistle Lucy had ever heard!  Out from seemingly nowhere, a huge dog appeared in front of him.  He was wearing....it looked like the collar Ms. Nettle had described to her, the one that the Wicked Queen uses to control her subjects...

Little Lace Garden Bag. Tote bag.
At first sight, Lucy was afraid of the dog.  He looked big and scary.  But when she looked into his eyes, she didn't see malice or anger....she saw fear.  "Was this big dog really afraid of such a young girl?  If so, why?  Maybe I will find a friend out here after all," thought Lucy.

Latigo Leather Dog Collar
Salome was searching through her tote bag and she pulled out two items.  First, she pulled out a beautiful, hand crocheted water bottle.  How she kept the water inside was probably yet another bit of black magic.  Then she pulled out a frightening mask.   She put the mask next to her on the ground and invited Lucy to sit.

Drogon Black Leather Dragon Mask
"We are getting close to the Candy House.  I have met up with the witch there before, she will recognize me in this mask."

Water Bottle
Salome took a long pull from the water and handed it to Lucy.  Lucy noticed the dog was panting.  She grabbed a large leaf from the many exotic looking trees around them and poured some water into it for the dog.

"Whats his name?" asked Lucy.
"Happy," responded Salome, "fitting, isn't it?"
For the first time Salome had a look of regret, sadness, or just disappointment?  Lucy waited for Salome to elaborate, but she just sat there in silence.  Lucy wished that Whimsy would come.  Even Ms. Nettle's rantings about Lulu knowing better would be welcome about now.

Lucy noticed a lone fawn sitting in the distance.  Something about this fawn scared Lucy.  Of course, just about everything was scaring her at this point.  She never felt so alone.  She began to think that her and that fawn had more in common than not.  Both were all alone, lost in these woods, helpless with no one to rely on.  Salome spotted the fawn and surprisingly looked a little frightened herself.

"It is time for us to get moving Lulu.  I have a feeling we are being watched," said Salome.
Lucy had had enough of the secrecy.  "What exactly would be watching us?  Why would they be watching us?  I will not continue on with you unless you answer my questions," asserted Lucy.

"I will try to explain myself to you, but I cannot be more serious about us having to move on!  SHE could be watching us.  SHE doesn't want us to accomplish our mission.  But what SHE doesn't know, she cannot do anything about.  So we need to keep a low profile and move on," explained Salome.

"She" could only mean the one and only Wicked Queen.  She could take on any form that she liked.

Holt Howard Cozy Kitten Salt and Pepper Shakers
They trekked on.  Happy started growling and ran ahead.  Salome and Lucy followed his path.  Ducking to avoid the hanging branches, jumping to avoid the tangled roots, Lucy could hear the fabric on her brand new dress from Charmy ripping as it snagged on every prickly bush around.  Happy had found two white cats.  The cats were just sitting there watching them, like they had known that the girls were coming.  As soon as Happy got close, one of the cats grew into a monstrous tiger and let out a roar!  As soon as Happy coward away, she returned to her white kitten form.

ACEO MAGNET TIGER.
The two eerily spoke in unison, they simply stated:

"We have been waiting for you.  We have two gifts to present to you.  They both will be useful to you on your journey.  When the opportunity to use these gifts presents itself, you will know."

With that, they both disappeared and in their place were two gifts (as promised).  One was a beautiful chunky aquamarine stone on a silver ring, the other was a basket full of soaps and other beauty supplies.

Aqua Marine Bead

Gift Basket, Monkey Farts
"What on earth could we possibly need THESE for?  As if our story isn't confusing enough already!" thought Lucy.  Salome scooped up the goods and put them in her tote.  They kept moving. In the distance, Lucy saw what literally looked exactly as it had always been described to her: the Candy House.

Hansel and Gretel - print of painting, 8"x10" unframed
"According to Lord Hansel and Lady Gretal, this house should be completely empty.  We have nothing to fear," thought Lucy.

Salome read her thoughts, "Did you actually believe those two nit-wits?  They are lucky they escaped with their lives!"

Salome pulled her mask over her face, as she did so, her whole body seemed to illuminate.

"Let's go knock on the door.  DON'T EAT ANYTHING!"

They knocked.  After a minute or two, the top half of the door opened up and a crotchety  old woman poked her head out.
"Are you two treasures looking for something to eat?" she asked.  "Oh, it's you.  I told you, I want nothing to do with your plot against the Wicked Queen."  With that she slammed the door.

Kitchen Witch, Riana
Salome pounded on the door.  "I told you to go away."  They could hear through the hard candy door.  Salome again opened up her tote.  She pulled out a pendant with a skull.  She placed the pendant above the witches door.

"So who are you anyways, Mary Poppins?  The way you seem to find all the world in that bag is just amazing," joked Lucy.

Salome gave her an evil look.  She truly looked like a demon in that whole outfit.

"Now she is trapped in her house.  Anyone who steps foot under this pendant will immediately be turned to a pile of sea salt.  She must walk under it in order to get it down.  Now she cannot interrupt what we need to do now," said Salome.

"And what exactly is that?" asked Lucy.

"We need to break into her garden!  She will not like that one bit.  Do you remember Repunzel's parents?  How they stole just a little lettuce from her garden and with that they had to give up their daughter.  Breaking into this witch's garden is no small matter."
Secret Garden

Lucy knew enough to take Salome's word for it.  "What was all that about you trying to plot against the Wicked Queen?"

Against all of her instincts, Salome decided to open up a little to Lucy.

Green Turquoise Magic Garden Charm Bracelet

"It's for Happy.  You know the collar, I could tell you recognized it when you saw it.  The Queen tricked me, telling me it would make Happy all powerful and that he would live forever.  If Happy has any power, I know not.  All I know is that his name became an irony on the day she welded it on him."

"All of this for a dog?"

"Would you do it for Whimsy?"

"Good point....."

"Now, give me that key......"

Once Upon a Time in the Foxes Den Kingdom (Part 3) - The Foxes Den Team

PART 3 - Introducing Honey

Autumn Fairy Print
Honey woke up that morning excited to enjoy the day.  She was hoping to meet up with Lulu….Lulu had sent her a “mental text” about Charmy being turned into a frog.  It may sound selfish, but Honey was excited!  Finally, something exciting to do!  Scout, Scarlet, Djali and Dodger were suffocating Honey as she lay in bed.

Fiery Sky - Fine Art Giclée Print

“I don’t think it is possible for these monsters to get ANY closer to me!” Honey said out loud to herself and to her four foxes.  “Why stop at four, I always ask myself….”

“I always say you should have stopped at one, but that’s just me…” joked Scarlet.  Scarlet was the first of the four that Honey had collected over the years…..she had a soft spot for animals.

There was a knock on the door.  Honey looked around her bedroom of her three roomed tree house and thought “Who on earth could that be?  Someone willing to climb a tree, I don’t remember leaving the ladder out….”

She climbed out of bed and made her way to the door…of course, it’s Stevie and Loki.  As usual, both Stevie and Loki were looking up from the ground with mischievous smirks on their faces.

Rose blossom fingerless glove
“Will you ever tell me how you do that?” asked Honey.
“I told you, I have long arms,” joked Stevie.
“Give me five minutes, then let’s go find Lulu.  I will explain on the way….”

Honey didn’t bother lowering the ladder, she fluttered down carrying the four foxes in her Hand Woven Ethnic Bag.  Once as she let the foxes out, she immediately started showing off her new Rose Blossom Gloves.  She had crocheted them from the yarn of one of Mary’s Magic Lambs.

“Those are very nice Honey.  Perfect, as always.  Now please tell me why we have to go find Lulu.  I was hoping we could maybe grab some breakfast?”

“Now that is exactly what I am trying to AVOID!  I want to do something fun!  We have to find Lulu because Charmy has been turned into a frog.  By the way, no one said you had to come…..” said Honey.
Modern Cross Stitch Pattern
She wanted him to come.  It’s not half as fun to go on an adventure alone…..or as safe, he would say.  Plus, she knew he would come, so she didn’t mind not letting him know.  He didn’t bother to respond because he knew her too well.  She would wind up in way over her head, he was going.  They had almost made it through the forest towards the Castle, and there it was.  The little valley that I like to call, “Luluville,” thought Honey.

“Honey, your wings…” reminded Stevie.  They were in town, and no one yet knew Honey was Morphen (part human, part fairy).  She grabbed her shawl from her bag and wrapped it over her wings.  She also pulled out a hat made of the same Magic Yarn and handed it to Stevie.

"Thanks, I look like a super hero in this!" teased Stevie.

“Oh darn,” said Honey.
She looked over to Lulu’s cottage to see that there was no Whimsy out in the field.  It wasn’t exactly hard to spot Whimsy, so Honey knew that Lulu must have already started on her trek.  Why she hadn’t sent her a mental text, was beyond Honey.  Hopefully she is ok….

“She probably went somewhere you can find frogs,” mentioned Stevie, “like a pond or lake…..”
Frangipani, small acrylic painting

“Of course,” said Honey.  “She went to Lake Wales.  Her and Charmy always go there!  There are many frogs there as well, so I suppose it would make sense that that is where he would go.”

Whimsy appeared through the clouds up ahead of them.  All the foxes but Scarlet were tearing up the field, playing with each other.  Scarlet stuck by Honey, as she always did.  Whimsy landed with a gust of wind but as graceful as a dove.

“Ms. Nettle, Zinc, and this cute little bunny?  What a combination!  What are you doing here?  And all together with Whimsy?  And most importantly, where is Lulu!?!”  asked an exasperated Honey.

Mrs. Nettle responded, “Well nice to see you too Honey.  Lucy has gone missing.  We think she may have went out on her own in search of Charmy.  We thought she had run off to say goodbye to Jan….but she never came back.  Whimsy must have received a message from her because he left us for a bit but came without her but seems very distraught.  I was hoping she sent you a message?”

“But Whimsy can always find Lulu!  They have this special connection,” responded Honey.

“Both Lucy and I felt some evil force around us in the forest just by Wales Lake.  I wonder if someone or something is interfering with her ability.  We have got to go back and try to track her down,” said Ms. Nettle.

“Something is wrong with all of this,” interjected Becky the bunny.  “You see, I overheard Lucy talking to a spider who called herself Jan.  The same Jan that Lucy ran after just before she went missing.  This spider wanted something from her, a key that she was wearing around her neck.  I think she was offering a trade, for a rose that she called ‘The Rose of Time’.”
At the mention of the rose, Honey noticed Stevie slightly jump.  She nudged him and looked at him knowingly.  He shrugged it off and gave her a look that meant “Not now.”

“Ok, and finally, why is Zinc here?”

Ms. Nettle looked very uncomfortable.

“Well, I am a friend of Nettle here.  I happened upon her and Becky here, and thought I might be of help.”

“Alright, enough,” said Stevie.  “Let’s make a plan and get moving.”
Wooden Toy - Pegasus Family

“We can’t all fit on Whimsy.  Honey and Stevie, you take her to the Chapel and start there.  We will head back to the Lake to see if we can find Charmy or any information about him.  Hopefully we will all end up in the same place in the end.

Scarlet and Loki, follow us on the ground.  Take care of Scout and Dodger.  DON’T FIGHT!” said Honey to the foxes.  Loki and Scarlet gave each other a resentful look.  But they knew what they had to do.

With that, Honey and Stevie were off with Whimsy on their trek to find Lucy.

“Now about that rose…..” started Honey.

Stevie gave her a defeated look…..

“Ok, here goes…..”
